THE DANISH GIRL
Following the events of the real lives of Einar and Gerda Wegener, this movie is a painting of deep sexual desires mixed with visionary thoughts, a painting by itself. For it is not only the brief depiction of forever unsettled and shy danish painter, but also a glorification of the brave pioneer of a transgender almost surreal surgical transformation of Einar into famous Lili Elbe - like the river. Some may even call it the story of the first man who has had the courage to take a leap of faith, persuaded by an incessant need to find his inner self.
So, the movie begins with (Copenhagen, 1926) the couple at a painters's reception ball. Einar's paintings of muddy hometown waters are being utterly appreciated. Their roost is working harmoniously, their relationship is one of the best with seemingly every reason to be considered a stabile marriage. And though everything seems perfect, as one of Gerda's muse for a painting fails to attend one meeting, Einar is asked to put on some stockings and a dress and act like a lady. That is
when he rediscovers himself, as a SHE.
So, as the movie continues, one new character emerges. Shy and misunderstood Einar disappears in order for a more ambitious and fragile Lili to come forward. And our story revolves around 2 main characters, 2 sidekicks and 2 personas. As time passes, Einar slowly fades away, leaving the scene to the daring pioneer, Lili, to express her own womanhood and grace. SHE then starts to fall in love and experience things her own manner, though the society has a problem taking her into consideration.
SHE soon visits several doctors, asking multiple questions, ending in horrible frustration and torment. That is till SHE finds Dr. Warnekros, which is finally the one able to transform her into the woman SHE desired to become all her life. So, as he performs the first surgery, young Lili Elbe - like the river - is starting to flourish. The movie presents us, though, that after the second surgery, Lili dies as SHE's telling Gerda her last peaceful dream. Full of grace and fragility, this movie is not only a beautiful story, but also a manifest to self-discovery.
